Accelerated Reader
AR is a program used by our school to encourage and monitor independent reading for our students. Your child may chose books from our school or classroom library. These books have been "leveled" and your student will know how to identify the proper book for independent reading. Students may also read books from home or gather them from our public libraries. To check whether or not a book is within your child's AR level simply visit www.arbookfind.com.
AR is optional in 2nd grade, although highly encouraged. AR becomes mandatory in 3rd grade. Goals are set, and if met by the end of each trimester, rewarded! Students will be given a bookmark with their appropriate independent reading range highlighted. The range is determined by their AR STAR reading placement test.
How it works:
Your child will take the AR STAR reading placement test at the beginning of each trimester.
Your child will receive a bookmark with their appropriate independent reading range highlighted.
They will need to check out a book that is in the same range as what is highlighted on their bookmark.
Their goals are based on them reading 15 minutes at home and at least 15 minutes at school. They should be able to answer Who, what , where, when questions about the story they have read. Then during school hours they take their AR test on their book. In order for them to make progress towards their goal they need to receive at least 80% on their AR test. When the test is over, they return their book. They can check out a new book during snack recess. Then they repeat the process.
